The New Monastery-Looking to the future

February 13th saw a momentous occasion here as the Abbess Máire Hickey laid the first brick of the new Monastery.

The Benedictine Community is at the heart of Kylemore Abbey since 1920. Their centenary year is being marked with this exciting project.  The 14-month building programme of phase 1 is due to be completed on Dec 4th; 100 years since the arrival of the Sisters to Kylemore.

The new Monastery is the most significant milestone of the past century at Kylemore- it is the first female Benedictine monastery to be built in Ireland in over 400 years. Today the community consists of 10 nuns who also welcome long-term monastic quests from abroad- including Britain, the US, Canada, Tongo, Rwanda, India, China, Europe, and the Ukraine.

The Monastery will support new vocations and provide a Guesthouse for lay guests and retreats. The nuns will host day retreats and programs for groups and individuals at the new Monastery, offering simplicity, meditation, and prayer in the inspiring surrounds of Kylemore.  Fr George delivered a blessing and  Mass which was attended by  Kylemore Trust Executive Director Conor Coyne, staff members, and the local community.

Centering Prayer retreat in preparation of Holy week and Easter

“Death is not the end of anything, but the final completion of a process and the triumph of the grace of God”.

A Centering Prayer retreat entitled  ‘The gift of life.: Death and Dying, Life and Living’ will take place at Kylemore Abbey from March 30th to April 3rd. This retreat offers the retreatant a deep immersion in the silence of Centering Prayer and will be enhanced by the opportunity to join the daily Offices of the Benedictine Community.

The retreat will be facilitated by Fionnuala Quinn O.P., Coordinator of Contemplative Outreach Dublin and Lesley Ann O’Connor who serves on the global team for Contemplative Outreach. The retreat will include DVDs featuring Fr Thomasa Keating, Lectio Divinia and one on one conversations with retreat facilitators.

Kylemore Abbey is especially magical at Christmas time and our talented guides will bring you on a trip back to Christmases past to learn about Irish, Kylemore and Victorian Christmas Traditions along with how Christmas has been celebrated by the Benedictine nuns at Kylemore for almost 100 years.

At 12 pm and 2 pm each Saturday and Sunday the guides will read the children’s classic, The Night Before Christmas, followed by a family orientated history tour. Your children will love imaging Kylemore Christmases in years gone by and what the nine Henry children expected to find in their stockings!
