Kylemore Abbey Named ‘Best in Connaught’ Blas na hÉireann Awards 2016.
Kylemore Abbey has long been known for its reputation for good food and home baking and over the last few years they have consolidated this success with a growing list of awards and a very full trophy cabinet! Marguerite Foyle, restaurant manager at Kylemore Abbey attended last weekend’s award ceremony in Dingle, County Kerry and picked up a total of three trophies as well as the titles ‘Best in Galway’ and ‘Best in Connaught’’.
Kylemore Abbey received a gold medal for their Healthy Brown Bread Baking Mix, a bronze award for their Traditional Bakewell Tart and a bronze award for Kylemore Abbey Country Cream. Being named ‘Best in Connaught is quite an achievement given the number of high quality small food producers that have emerged in the region over the last few years. Now in its 9th year, Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards is the biggest competition for quality Irish produce on the island of Ireland. Over 2500 products were entered into the 2016 competition.
Kylemore Abbey was one of the first business’ in Ireland to create food products to sell, based on what was popular in their own restaurant. In the 1980’s the Benedictine nuns of Kylemore, began to sell their traditionally prepared recipes in the winter months when the tourists disappeared and the restaurant kitchens stood idle. As more and more visitors asked for jam, bread and cake recepies to bring home it became apparent that using the kitchens in the ‘down season’ to supply this need was the answer. Since then the range of products has grown to include jams, chutneys, baking mixes, traditional Christmas cakes, puddings and condiments, handmade chocolates and the increasingly popular Kylemore Irish Country Cream. Kylemore Abbey products now travel the globe in the luggage of tourists who bring them home as unique gifts and are also shipped worldwide from Kylemore’s shop and from their online shop www.kylemoreabbey.com.
