Gospel Reflection for the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A.

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. (Psalm 62)
Today's familiar parable of the Ten Bridesmaids reminds us Christ is on his way back and that we must keep constant watch. We know not the day nor the hour, as Jesus tells us himself, but what we do know for certain is that he will meet each one of us personally upon our death even if he seemingly delays his Second Coming, the great and final Parousia. Jesus, through the medium of his Church, reminds us to be always ready for death.
A curious point in this parable for me is what could be its alternate title: 'The Oil That Cannot be Shared.' While watching for Christ is surely a collective affair this parable emphasizes that personal vigilance is central to the life of a Christian. Each one has been given a lamp - Your word is a lamp for my steps and a light to my eyes; (Psalm 119:105). God knocks at every heart. We must guard and keep watch over our own soul first of all because when the Bridegroom comes knocking on my door it is too late to borrow a light from anyone else.
Lord, help me watch and pray.
