Kylemore Abbeys Connemara Ponies Return to Áras an Uachtaráin
This summer, one of Ireland's best-loved native breeds will once again take up residence at Áras an Uachtaráin, as Connemara mare Ruby and her foal Peaceful Pippa travel from Kylemore Abbey to graze the front lawn of President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly’s official residence.
More than just a picturesque summer tradition, the visit celebrates an enduring symbol of Ireland's natural and cultural heritage. Bred in the landscape of Connemara, the Connemara pony is the country's only native pony breed, renowned worldwide for its temperament, intelligence and versatility.
The ponies, affectionately known as the "Peaceful Ponies" of Kylemore Abbey, will spend the summer welcoming visitors and international dignitaries to the Áras, continuing a partnership that captured the public's imagination when it was first introduced during the pandemic.
Adding to the significance of the visit, one of Kylemore Abbey's Benedictine nuns will personally accompany Ruby and her foal on their journey from Connemara to Dublin, reflecting Kylemore Abbey's long tradition of stewardship, hospitality and their care for the breed. Speaking in advance of the journey, Mother Karol O’Connell OSB, Abbess at Kylemore Abbey remarked; "The Connemara Ponies are an integral part of the landscape surrounding Kylemore Abbey and have become part of everyday life for our Benedictine Community. Each spring, we look forward with great joy to the arrival of the foals, watching them take their first steps and grow in stature and personality. It is a privilege to share that joy, and this special part of the Connemara landscape, with President Catherine Connolly and the many visitors and international dignitaries who will visit Áras an Uachtaráin over the summer."
The story also celebrates the West of Ireland. Both Kylemore Abbey and President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, are deeply rooted in Galway, making the visit a fitting tribute to a region that has shaped Ireland's language, landscape and living traditions. Commenting on the significance of the bond, President Connolly remarked; “I am delighted to welcome Ruby and Pippa to Áras an Uachtaráin for the summer months. Connemara Ponies have an important place in the culture and heritage of West of Ireland life. I am very grateful to Kylemore Abbey for their help with this initiative and I know that all of the visitors to Áras an Uachtaráin over the remainder of the summer will treasure the opportunity of being close to our only native pony breed.”
Beyond the charming imagery lies a wider story about preserving native breeds, biodiversity, sustainable grazing and the role of heritage in modern Ireland. As visitors arrive at Áras an Uachtaráin throughout the summer, one of the first symbols of Ireland they encounter will not be a monument or a building but living ambassadors from Connemara.
