Gospel Reflection for the Third Sunday of Easter, Year B.
By The Benedictine Community
Lord, let your face shine on us. (Psalm 4)
Today's Gospel of Luke concludes the Emmaus story, with Cleopas and his companion rushing back to Jerusalem, to tell the Eleven that they had seen the Lord. While they were telling their amazing story, Jesus himself appeared in their midst. His words of greeting to calm and wish them peace are unsuccessful as the Eleven are overcome by a mixture of joy, fright and disbelief.
In order to reassure them that he is not a ghost, he asks for something to eat and eats grilled fish before their eyes. Then can he instruct and enlighten them.
Those of us reading this Gospel today can be just as amazed as the Eleven because Christianity did spread to all nations, starting from Jerusalem, just as Jesus commanded. This Gospel gives us courage and hope that with Jesus in our midst we have nothing to fear: He has conquered the world.
