Gospel Reflection for the Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B.
By The Benedictine Community
Keep me safe, O God;
you are my hope. (Psalm 15)
The Church uses the end of the liturgical year to remind us that our world is finite and will come to an end. The accompanying catastrophic signs in the heavens will herald the Parousia, the second and final coming of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ..
At the present time, as ever before in Church history prophets are appearing out of every nook and cranny and foretelling the imminent Parousia. I marvel at their invincible certainty, despite the fact that our Lord explicitly tells us that only the Father knows when it will happen.
Jesus wants us to be prepared, to be ready and watchful so that when he does come for each of us personally, and come he certainly will, he will find us faith-full and true, waiting to greet him.
