Gospel Reflection for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Year B
By The Benedictine Community
The stone rejected by the builders
has become the cornerstone.(Psalm117)
Here in Connemara the image of the Good Shepherd comes very easily to us as we are surrounded by sheep on all sides although we hesitate to identify ourselves with these silly but lovable creatures. Nevertheless, we would do well to compare the traits we have in common with our woolly brethren. For example; we follow the herd: we panic easily and rush headlong without thinking: we cannot defend ourselves when we are attacked by inner or outer enemies and we need to be guided and looked after.
No one knew this better than our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ who has promised us his loving and watchful care. He has guided his Church down through the ages and he guides each one of its members individually and personally - if we let him, if we can clear our woolly headedness and say: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Alleluia!
