Gospel Reflection for the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B

With the Lord there is mercy,
and fullness of redemption. (Psalm 129)

Today's Gospel of Mark is a very complex one. Jesus has begun his ministry and has attracted followers who recognize the truth of his teachings. He has also attracted strong opposition from both the religious intellectuals of his day, and from members of his own family who are convinced he is out of his mind.  In this fraught situation where does the truth lie?
Jesus replies to his critics on two levels. The religious intellectuals  are accused of denying Truth itself in denying the truth of the Holy Spirit: in other words, calling the Good News of salvation fake news. This sin, chillingly, cannot be forgiven.
To the critics within his own family he replies in a way which gives great comfort to all his followers down through the ages and generations, down to each of us personally.. Anyone who does the will of God is intimately related to Jesus, becoming his brother, his sister or his mother.
This divine relationship is one to strive for with all our might throughout our whole life. Jesus Christ, dear brother, stay with us on our journey to heaven.
