Gospel Reflection for Easter Sunday, Year B

"It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb."

This opening sentence never fails to fill me with joy. This of course was not Mary Magdalen's first reaction when she found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. Then as John's Gospel story unfolds we run the gamut of her emotions: surprise, wonder, disbelief, until timid hope dissolves into belief and belief gives way to joy. Christ, our hope - and hers - has risen. Recognition gives way to adoration and then Jesus sends her on a mission.

Easter Sunday is the day in which to renew our love for the Easter mysteries: Christ's redemptive death and Resurrection and above all, for His living presence among us. Alleluia!
